IMPROVISATIONAL TYING
Want to move beyond cooking from recipes and start cooking from the heart?
When you start learning to tie, it’s easy to collect patterns and sequences like recipes without ever really learning how the ingredients work together. This can make it hard to be truly in the moment, responsive to the person you're tying with and can create confusion when things don't go as expected, even though you followed the recipe to a T.
This is a day-long workshop dedicated to the study of improvisational harnesses and the art of tying without a plan. We’ll break down common building blocks of suspendable patterns, and consider how harnesses work as a holistic unit under load to support the body in a variety of positions.
Each attendee will improvise their own suspension-worthy harnesses. We'll then zoom out of the harness focus and tend to the larger arc of a scene, exploring how we can create the conditions for more collaboration between partners.
Tops will be offered a variety of tools and ideas that facilitate more unplanned, improvisational tying in response to the unique energy that their partner is bringing on the day, and open up doors to more spontaneity in play. For a deeper dive into how you show up as a more intentional collaborator from the bottom, check out Sacrificial Offerings.
* Each attending pair will be tying on a bamboo point. If you prefer to tie on multiple single points instead, be sure to bring all the gear you need (straps, carabiners and/or plates).
* There will be a one hour lunch break during this workshop. You are welcome to stay in the studio to eat or head out. Exact timing will be determined once the workshop is underway.
* Doors open at 9:30am / class starts at 10am (please allow for parking and time to settle in so we can start on time!)
* Tea and coffee and light snacks will be available throughout the day.
* If finances are a barrier for your attendance, please email us at voxbody@gmail.com. We hold limited observer spots for this workshop.
Pre-requisites: Attendees should be quite comfortable with suspension and simple transitions in the air. Tops should feel confident and quick in their upline lock offs and descents and be familiar with a number of upper and lower body harness patterns.
Bottoms should be at least intellectually aware of the difference between circulation restriction and nerve compression, and feel comfortable communicating through stress.
About the presenter:
fuoco (she/her) began her rope journey as a bottom in Phoenix in 2012 and shortly thereafter moved to London, where much of her early rope learning happened. Upon moving back to the US, she began presenting at conferences and intensives around the country, while regularly returning to Europe to further her education. Her career as a bondage practitioner, teacher, and performer grew alongside her career as a professional acrobat and movement specialist. She's trained extensively in partner acrobatics, contortion, and hair hanging, and through these disciplines has developed a keen sense of how to explore intensity in sustainable ways and what it means for two bodies to be in conversation with one another. In 2023 she joined Shibar Study as Director of Education and has been thinking about shibari education full time since.
She believes that kink is inherently political, and strives to bring her politics, values, and an accountability for those values into her teaching spaces. She offers private lessons and sessions out of Imprint Studio in downtown Northampton, MA.
