A celebration of South West forests and the movement to protect them
Fremantle/Walyalup, Friday 17th Dec, 6:30 - 11:30pm, Pakenham Street (Street Party!), outside the PS Art Space, including an exhibition of campaign memorabilia inside the PS Art Space.
The South West forests are globally unique and incredibly precious and over the next few weeks, in three great locations, the WA Forest Alliance is hosting three Forest Fiestas to celebrate these forests and the recent breakthrough in their conservation.
The movement for the protection of the south-west’s forests has reached a historic milestone. On the 8th of September, Premier McGowan committed to ending native forest logging in WA by January 2024.
Thanks to the heartfelt work of thousands of people of many decades, the South West native forests' intrinsic, climate and biodiversity values are being recognised and given precedence by the State Government.
That means that 400,000 hectares of Jarrah, Karri and Wandoo forests - from the mycelium in the soil, to the incredible richness and diversity of plants, unique and precious birds and mammals, rivers and streams, and every creature living among them - are being protected from logging machinery and chainsaws. These forests will be left to grow, and to continue to draw carbon out of the atmosphere and help to mitigate and build local resilience to climate change. And $400 million is being invested in transitioning the industry and supporting affected workers.
THAT is worth a party!
And not just any party, but a rolling street FIESTA!
We will be following the same path that the campaign has followed for many years, from the South Coast forest areas on Pibelmen Country, to where the forest meets the sea in Wardandi Country, and up to Wadjuk Country.
Let’s come together to acknowledge and celebrate the forests we love and the long road we have travelled so far to defend them.
From here, much work remains to be done to get the details right and ensure forests are properly and securely protected, and as we celebrate, we regenerate, recharge, and stoke the fires of the forest movement.
We look forward to seeing you in Denmark, Margaret River and / or Fremantle on the dates below.
Registration is free, however we welcome donations to help cover costs and remunerate the bands and artists. Every dollar counts and when you donate, you go in the draw to win a door prize valued at $1,000 (one prize for each event).
New details of these events are emerging every day, so stay tuned for artist and entertainment updates.
We acknowledge and pay our respects to the traditional owners of the south west forests across the Noongar/Bibbulmun nation. This always was and always will be Aboriginal land.

**POSTPONED***Margaret River/Wooditchup
Due to the fires surrounding Margaret River, we've made the decision to postpone the Margaret River Forest Fiesta scheduled for this Sunday. We want to support the community to be fully available for those in need, to support their firefighting efforts and to attend to any grief we all may be feeling from the loss of bush and wildlife that we feel so connected to.
We will pick up the threads of this event and celebrate at a more appropriate time.
Our hearts and thoughts are with the community and the bush and wildlife on Wadandi Country.
