Love Her Wild - Introduction to Wild Camping

Join us for a night in the Cairngorms.  Our introduction to wild camping course is the perfect way to try out wild camping if you've never done it before, or you'd like a bit more confidence, and we'll be there with you every step of the way. 

We'll meet in Aviemore before catching the bus to Coylumbridge then wander along into the mountains and lochs through the glacial valley of Glen Einaich.  This is an historic path that the people of the townships in the Rothiemurchus area took to their summer shielings. The purpose of travelling to the shielings at the end of the glen was to take their cattle and give the ground time to recover.  We will have a leisurely walk, getting used to the weight of the pack on our backs, looking around us, seeing the geology, plant life, history and hopefully some wildlife.

Two weeks before the event, there will be an evening session on Teams to go through the kit list, how to pack your rucksack and give you some ideas of food to take with you. A kit list will be sent to you after booking.

• Finding a suitable wild campsite - on the ground and clues from the map, including basic map reading
• How to pitch your tent
• How and what to cook**
• How to find safe drinking water
• How and where to wild toilet

Difficulty

• Moderate - should be able to walk for 3-4 hours comfortably
• Terrain - easy going tracks
• Distance covered each way - 9 - 11 km (5.6 - 6.8 miles; dependent on the campsite that we choose)
• Total ascent - 300 m
• Walking time - 4 - 6 hours each way

Some kit is available for hire, particularly tents, stoves and sleeping bags on request. Hire prices are purely to cover any wear and tear on kit. Kit will be issued the week before from a central location or on the day of the event. 

* Participants are responsible for their travel to and from the start point. 

• Aviemore is easily accessed by train from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness
• Ember, Flixbus, Megabus, CityLink also have a service that runs from both Glasgow and Edinburgh
• From Aviemore station, take the number 30 Stagecoach bus to Coylumbridge (approx 6 mins from station)

We reserve the right to cancel the event or change the location if the weather is not suitable e.g. high winds, heavy rain, thunder forecast
