Curious about zines? Wondering what the heck they are and how to become one of those cute analog girlies that make them? Look no further!

In this beginner-friendly workshop lead by our local zine queen Dana Mendieta  (Everything In Neon), we will teach you everything you need to create your own small, self-published magazine from scratch.

“Zines” (short for fanzines) are small, handmade booklets that can hold anything: personal stories, poems, collages, political thoughts, comics, quotes, travel memories, manifestos, lyrics, or just weird little ideas you don’t want to live only in your Notes app.

In this 2-hour workshop, you’ll:

  • Learn a brief history of zines and their roots in DIY culture

  • Explore different formats and simple methods for zine making

  • Play with collage, text, drawing, and mixed media

  • Create your own mini zine to take home

This space is low-pressure, welcoming, and beginner-friendly. No art experience required.

We’ll provide:

  • Booklet

  • Scissors, glue, tape

  • Pens & markers

  • Magazines and collage materials

  • Stickers & fun bits

You’re also encouraged to bring (optional):

  • Old photos

  • Ticket stubs, business cards, scraps, or personal ephemera

  • Any special trinkets or textures you’d like to incorporate

Please note: We are located on the second floor of a historic building that is only accessible via walk up.

All tickets are non-refundable. Transfers may be available upon request.

About Everything in Neon: Dana Mendieta is a multidisciplinary artist based in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, where her lifelong love of creating continues to evolve in vibrant and unexpected ways. From her earliest days experimenting with scrapbooking and journaling, Dana has always found comfort and expression in handmade work—an influence that now threads through her junk journals, zines, and mixed‑media pieces.
In 2015, she launched Everything in Neon, originally as a home for her handmade jewelry. What began as a small creative venture quickly grew into a dynamic brand encompassing ceramics, resin art, collage, one‑of‑a‑kind keychains, up‑cycled clothing and accessories, and an ever‑expanding range of playful, tactile mediums. Her work has been sold at artisan markets across the United States—including New York City, Miami, and Pittsburgh—and has traveled even farther through shipments to customers around the world.
Beyond her studio practice, Dana brings her creativity into her work as a Licensed Professional Counselor, using art as a therapeutic tool to support and empower the children she serves. Her artistic life and her counseling work inform one another, each rooted in curiosity, expression, and the belief that creativity can be a powerful force for connection and healing.
