This intensive is taught by Zach Weiss for soon-to-be, current, and past Water Stories Core Course students only.

We've crafted this experience to advance your skills as quickly and thoroughly as possible, so come prepared to level up your skills and abilities in Water Cycle Restoration. For those that have or are planning to take the Water Stories Core Course this is the workshop to provide the hands on components and experiences so you're fully ready and confident to be a practitioner, taught by Zach Weiss.

July 20th - 27th, 2024

Spend 8 days at Belle Mare Farm in Willamina, Oregon, USA with Zach Weiss and our workshop team learning practical, hands-on techniques for terraforming to rejuvenate landscapes and ecosystem health. These techniques provide resilience to drought, flood, fire, and a myriad of ecological and environmental benefits. This learning intensive takes place in the middle of an active month-long project, so you can witness a real earthworks project unfold in real time. The whole process will be recorded and shared during the intensive, so you can experience the whole process from start to finish. The scope for this project entails the installation of a pond, terraces, and assessing or tapping a spring.

A Truly Unique Opportunity

Working with the earth is a dynamic process that requires one to be actively engaged and to think on their feet. Along with learning important earthworks techniques, such as soil assessments, excavator safety, and spillway construction; we will also discuss the importance of active project observation and the careful decision making dance that follows. This is a one-of-a-kind workshop that will guide you through the many aspects of working with the earth to bring abundance to the land and its inhabitants through water.

This Intensive, led by Zach Weiss, will take place Saturday, July 20th through Saturday, July 27th. Expect to have full days with a diverse mix of hands-on activities, site planning, intensive learning and skill building exercises. Asking questions and engaging in dialogue is highly encouraged throughout the event. The first 5 days will be focused on learning as much as possible, and the subsequent 3 days focus on implementing and practical work on projects throughout the farm. This is an opportunity to shadow a live project during normal operation and for implementing the hand details for the project, including spillway construction, mulching, rock work, etc. This is the time to get dirty and dive in so you feel fully confident in replicating these techniques elsewhere.

Accommodations

This is an immersive experience where participants have the opportunity to camp on-site for free. Our goal is to facilitate a sense of community so we can share ideas and learn from each other throughout the 8 days and then afterwards. There will be an area to gather around a campfire (unless prohibited) at the end of the day to discuss material, ask questions, and share some laughs. There will be access to the creek for cooling off and bathing, as well as a simple food prep area and porta-potties.

There are ample air bnb and conventional options in the area, though they can fill early at this time of year. If you don’t want to camp on site we recommend securing reservations a month or more in advance. Search for options near Willamina, Oregon.

If you'd rather not camp, here are some recommended nearby accommodations:
