Theatre Translation Lab: Open Sessions

Looking for a collaborative space to explore theatre translation?

Join us for an open, practical lab session on the art of translating for the stage. With over fifteen years of experience sharing world theatre, including nine UK/world premieres and contributions to over 30 new English translations, we're excited to share our journey and insights with you.

Our Theatre Translation Lab sessions are shaped by the participants. This one begins with a practical exercise to get us thinking and talking, then opens up from there. Bring a translation challenge if you have one, questions around staging plays in translation or simply come ready to explore.

Led by Co-Artistic Director Trine Garrett and joined by Associate Artists, translators Charis Ainslie and Paul Russell Garrett, the session combines practical exercises, real-world reflection and space for discussion and exchange. A great opportunity to hear directly from practising translators who have been part of our translation journey.

Whether you’re new to theatre translation or already working in the space – this one's for you!

Who it's for: This is for translators, theatre-makers with language skills, and anyone curious about bringing plays to life in a new language who:

• Are curious about our work and approach

• Have a translation challenge, question, or work-in-progress they'd like to dig into
• Want to connect with fellow translators and theatre-makers working in this space
• Whether you're just starting out or looking for fresh inspiration, you're very welcome!

What we'll explore:

• The journey from translated text to staged production

• Key decisions that shape cross-cultural work, and what we've learned from ours
• The realities of producing plays in translation in the current landscape
• Your questions, your practice, your experience

How it works:

• Open structure – the session kicks off with a facilitated exercise, then responds to the needs of the group. We'll break into smaller groups if needed, with space for creative problem-solving and free-flowing discussion.

• Shaped by you – based on questions we ask when you sign up, we'll use frameworks and exercises that respond to what's in the room, encouraging experimentation, exchange and collective problem-solving.

Schedule

• 10:30-11:00: Arrival & Refreshments
• 11:00-13:00: Work Session (including a 10-minute break)
• 13:00-13:30: Wrap-Up & Networking

Before and after each session everyone will have time to connect, reflect, and ease in and out of the session. We'll also be around to chat all things theatre and translation.

How Much It Costs: Thanks to the generous support of Arts Council England this session is free of charge. However, if you’re able to, we’d greatly appreciate any donations to help us continue offering these opportunities. Spaces are limited, so booking is essential!
