What if a teacup could grieve? What if a streetlamp could fall in love? In this unique 8-week online improv course, you’ll step outside the human experience and into the inner lives of inanimate objects unlocking surprising emotional depth, creativity and connection along the way.

Said the Toaster to the Fridge is designed for advanced improvisers who want to deepen their scene work by exploring character, relationship and storytelling from an entirely fresh perspective. By playing objects rather than people, you’ll bypass familiar habits and discover new ways to access authentic emotion, physicality and point of view.

Across eight weeks, you’ll learn how to:

  • Build fully realized object characters with distinct wants, fears and identities
  • Create emotionally grounded scenes that resonate with audiences
  • Use physicality and environment to inspire transformation and presence
  • Develop rich relationships between non-human characters
  • Find meaning, stakes and narrative in unexpected places

By the end of the course, you won’t just “play objects”—you’ll bring them to life in ways that are funny, moving and deeply human.

As a dedicated improviser, she founded We Are Improv in Lancaster, UK in 2011, a company that went on to perform at renowned festivals including Improv Fest Ireland, ImproFest UK, and the Bristol Improv Festival. After having her 2 children Katy switched her focus from performing to teaching, creating a supportive and encouraging online community.

Katy has trained extensively with leading figures in the improv community, including Pgraph (The Hideout Theatre, Austin, Texas), Jason Chin (iO, Chicago), Rich and Rebecca Sohn (Annoyance Theatre, Chicago), The Maydays (Brighton, London), David Razowsky and Keith Johnstone.

Her expertise lies in narrative long form, with a particular focus on creating improvised plays. Katy’s past shows include The Nearly Famous Five, a playful homage to Enid Blyton’s works, and Four Walls, a 50-minute monoscene where three actors remain onstage until the precise moment the clock strikes zero.
