Sat Nov 19, 2022 7:30 PM - 10:00 PM
Rolling Bay Hall, 98110
Description
Duende Libre is a dynamic and uplifting quintet that blends elements of Afro-Cuban jazz with Brazilian samba, American funk, and traditional West African music into a unique sound of their own. The band’s most-recent album won an Earshot Jazz Golden Ear award for “Northwest Recording of the Year.”
Jazziz called Duende’s music “a strikingly authentic blend” and Earshot Jazz wrote “Duende Libre is aural balm for the soul…” Their third album "The Dance She Spoke" is available now.
"Duende Libre is aural balm for the soul, medicine that goes down easy, and will leave you healed in both
body and spirit. Daily use is recommended (Earshot Jazz)."
ABOUT THE BAND
ALEX CHADSEY, piano
Keyboard player Alex Chadsey,
fluent in jazz and classical forms, arrived in Seattle with music
degree in hand, wondering which direction to go next. After initially
playing in Salsa bands, Chadsey’s creative output changed dramatically,
coming together in 2016 as a trio project Duende Libre. Their
self-titled debut album distills years of performing, apprenticing with
master musicians, and crafting originals that explore Latin elements in
new contexts. The results are savvy and grooving, reflecting the
Seattle scenes Chadsey inhabits and loves, where Uzbek bassists and
Jamaican poets and border-crossing fandangos power musical visions.
FARKO DOSUMOV, electric bass
In the last 15 years, Dosumov has become one of the most versatile
and in-demand electric bassists in the Pacific Northwest. He is a
musician of lofty technical skills balanced by earthy blues roots, with a
growling, well-defined tone and a relentlessly smoking groove and
locked-in time feel. He is also a superb soloist, with a beautifully
flowing and articulate melodic sense.
Cornish College professor Chuck Deardorf was an early mentor to Dosumov, and calls him “a major force on the bass.”
Michael Shrieve, the legendary drummer and bandleader in whose unit Spellbinder Dosumov has played for years, was also an early champion of Dosumov’s talents: “I could sense that he was one of those rare, young musicians that have a hunger, a fire in the belly … I’ve had the pleasure of seeing and hearing that passion grow into a formidable musical force.”
JEFF “BONGO” BUSCH, drums & percussion
We last saw Jeff 'Bongo' Busch at the recent and sold out Jovino Santos Neto Quinteto event. He is an exuberant drummer/percussionist, vocalist, and composer whose passion for soulful music of varied traditions has led him to perform with jazz, blues, and gospel groups--as well as calypso, samba, and Cuban jazz ensembles.
Jeff has a cult following as he continues to perform with a variety of groups in the Seattle area Cuban jazz groups Rumba Abierta, and Tumbao led by pianist Julio Jauregui; Cuban dance band Mango Son, led by Roberto Sanchez, the
well-known FIRST AME Church, and Duende Libre.
FRANK ANDERSON, vocals, drums, dancer
Singer
Frank Anderson's warm tenor voice and original renditions of jazz,
R&B, blues and gospel songs from the 30s to the early-70s offer an
eclectic range of soul-satisfying music. A Seattle native, Frank has
been performing as a dancer, percussionist and R&B vocalist since
1986. You can usually catch Frank with many of Seattle’s top musicians
at Seattle clubs such as Capitol Cider, Egan's and North City Bistro.
CHAVA MIREL, vocals & other instruments
Singer
and multi-instrumentalist Chava Mirel has been featured vocalist for
Duende Libre, whose album “Drift” was the recipient of the Golden Ear
Award for Best Recording in the Northwest. Performing in Folk, World
Music, Jazz and other genres, she imbues her music with the universal
themes of hope, caring, connection, inclusion, and women's and
environmental issues. Chava is known for her rich, luxurious vocals,
lush harmonies, and rhythmic phrasing.
