Underground + live score

Waltham Forest Cinema Project presents a live piano score for a silent classic, set on the streets and tube platforms of 1920s London. World-renowned accompanist John Sweeney will join us to play live along to Anthony Asquith’s Underground (1928).

An incredible time capsule of London, Underground tells the story of lovers meeting in the tube, but things get off track very quickly. Electrician Bert is taken with shop girl Nell, but she has also caught the eye of underground porter Bill. The love triangle plays out in high drama, but against a surprisingly familiar portrait of every day life in London, from pub rooms to power stations.

Released at the pinnacle of silent film just before the arrival of sound cinema, Underground is a rare tale of working class life on screen during the era, but shot with expressionist style rather than a social realist eye. Largely shot on location, there are plenty of moments that’ll be familiar if you’re commuting from on the Central line today from Leytonstone!
