The Weight Stigma Conference is an inter-disciplinary event that brings together scholars and practitioners from a range of backgrounds (e.g., public health, government and public policy, psychology, medicine, sociology, anthropology, allied health professions, education, sports and exercise science, social sciences, media studies, business, law, activism, and the lay public) to consider research, policy, rhetoric, and practice around the issue of weight stigma. We are honoured to present our keynote speakers for this year's Weight Stigma Conference:

Lene Bull Christiansen (she/her) is Associate Professor at the Institute for Communication and Arts at Roskilde University in Denmark. She has a background in International Development Studies and Cultural Studies. Her current research area of focus is Fat Studies from the perspective of Gender and Media Studies. She is the co-author of the Danish Weight Stigma Report and has headed the Research Project Feminist Activism in Transition (FAT). Lene prioritises public research dissemination and has edited and co-written the anthology TYK (fat), which introduces a wide range of perspectives on fat lives to the general public, and has hosted the podcast De Fede Feminister (the fat feminists), which introduces themes within Fat Studies to the public. Lene has co-founded the Nordic Network of Fat Studies and the Danish interdisciplinary research network Ligevægt (weight equality).

Headshot of Angel Austin. She is black woman, her hair is up off her face and she is smiling. She is wearing a black top and large hoop earrings.

Angel Austin (she/her) is Executive Director of the Association for Size Diversity and Health (ASDAH), holder of the trademark for Health at Every Size® (HAES®). She promotes and protects this paradigm of size-inclusiveness in health, expressed through the HAES® Principles and Framework of Care. Angel is Black, infinifat, chronically ill, and disabled. She calls on wisdom gained in life at these historically oppressed intersections to drive policy change through the lens of liberation and social justice. Angel is also the creator of Sacred Space for Fat Bodies, an online advocacy space focused on community-centered fundraising for fat, Black folks, storytelling, and spiritual reflection. She shares tools for superfat+ people who are chronically ill and/or disabled and who are seeking support. Her work prioritizes dignity over weight loss and justice over maintaining the status quo. Angel has unshakable audacity and strives to help those she supports move from survival toward thriving in community. Across the organizations she serves, the common thread is her dedication to building a sustainable future of care for those most harmed by weight stigma, racism, ableism, and healthism. Angel lives in Austin, Texas with her husband, their Rottweiler, "Boomer", and "Sydney", their pet tarantula.

Bursary Fund – Supporting Accessibility

The Weight Stigma Conference is a not-for-profit event. Although we try and keep prices down, we realise that the conference will nevertheless be beyond some people's means. Rather than raising the cost of tickets, we will make every effort to raise additional funding through donations and sponsorship to allow us to give bursaries to individuals who otherwise wouldn't be able to attend. A Donation option is available for both delegates and non-attendees who are in a position to contribute a little extra to help us provide financial assistance where needed. Donations can also be made through our Go Fund Me page - please share this page with your networks. To date, the WSC Bursary Fund has allowed us to provide 121 bursaries and 11 travel awards. Thank you so much for your generosity. If you are interested in formal sponsorship of the event, please email us: stigmaconf@gmail.com.

Accessibility Accommodations

The chairs used in the conference venue have no arms. Online, automatic closed captioning  is available via Zoom. For other accessibility requirements, please indicate on your registration questionnaire. If we are not able to accommodate your needs, we will reach out to discuss options with you. Note, we cannot guarantee requests made less than 14 days prior to the conference.
