What happens at a Wellbeing Ceilidh™?
A ceilidh is a relaxed and sociable form of group dancing accompanied by live folk music.
Our experienced Gog Magog ceilidh band and caller will explain each dance and guide everyone through it step by step, so you do not need to know any dances in advance.
The Wellbeing Ceilidh™ builds on some of the things that make ceilidhs such powerful community experiences: shared activity, movement, enjoyment, connection, inclusion and belonging.
There are lots of ways to take part. You might:
- dance;
- join in while seated or standing;
- move in your own way;
- watch or listen;
- socialise;
- take a break; or
- simply enjoy the atmosphere.
You choose whether, when and how you participate.
It is always fine to sit out, pause, change your mind or rejoin later.
The space may sometimes feel busy and lively, with live music, conversation, movement and changes of direction. A quieter area and seating will be available throughout the evening.
A welcoming and inclusive event
We are working to make the evening as inclusive and accessible as reasonably possible.
People of all genders are welcome to dance together, and you can choose who you dance with. You do not need to attend with a partner.
Dancing is only one way to participate. Seated, standing, non-dancing and quieter forms of participation are equally welcome.
The venue has:
- step-free access through the Downing Place entrance;
- an accessible toilet;
- an installed hearing loop;
- plenty of seating; and
- a quieter area away from the main dancing.
Wheelchairs, walking aids and other mobility equipment are welcome.
If you would like to discuss mobility, balance, sensory, hearing, visual, communication, cognitive or other access requirements, please contact us before the event. You do not need to provide a diagnosis—only the practical information you would like us to know.
We will provide honest information about what the event can offer and do our best to support your participation.
