Public Launch of Westar Social Gospel Seminar
The call for justice has always been part of Christianity's social concern from the deepest reaches of its history. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the expressions “Social Salvation” and “Social Gospel” were born, focusing on the address poverty, ending labor exploitation, promoting universal suffrage, and advocating for government regulation to bear on unaccountable wealth. Though in different guises, these are same issues we face today.
The Westar Social Gospel Seminar will recover the biblical, historical, and theological voices of justice with the academic power of honesty. The Seminar will seek to raise critical questions about society and our collective future. In the spirit of Westar, the seminar will seek to ensure its proceedings are held in public for public benefit.
Join Westar scholars in the public launch of the new Social Gospel Seminar. Let's remember together why the Social Gospel matters.
Featured speakers Christopher Evans, Boston University, author of The Social Gospel in American Religion (NYU Press) and other prominent Westar scholars.
