Course details
This one-day course will guide you through the basic techniques of tapestry weaving. Working on a small frame, you will be introduced to the process of tapestry weaving before learning a number of different weaving techniques such as hatching, diagonals and the creation of simple shapes.
The course will also provide advice on how to set up your frame, how to use the required tools for making a tapestry and where to get materials.
By the end of the course, you will have completed your first piece of tapestry weaving.
Materials to bring
- Scissors
- A notepad and pen/pencil
- Reading glasses, if needed for close work
Materials included
Warp and weft yarns will be provided, and frames can be borrowed for use on the course.
Equipment provided
All necessary equipment will be provided for use on the course.
About the tutor
Philip is Studio Leader of the West Dean Tapestry Studio and is a subject tutor on the MFA in Fine Art. He is also the tutor for the Tapestry Foundation Diploma, a short course tutor at the college and a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art.
Philip trained at Middlesex Polytechnic and The Royal College of Art before joining the West Dean Tapestry Studio in 1993. During his time at West Dean College, Philip has translated the work of several artists into large-scale tapestries, including Marta Rogoyska, John Hubbard, Tracy Emmin and Eva Rothschild. He has also designed and woven tapestries for a variety of spaces, including The Surrey History Centre, Woking, Portcullis House, Chelmsford Cathedral and Mercers Hall.
Philip also has his own studio practice. Recent exhibitions have included Here and Now in 2017/18 – the first major curated exhibition of contemporary tapestry in England for over 20 years, and he has been shortlisted three times for the Cordis Trust Prize for Tapestry at the Scottish Royal Academy and Inverleith House, Edinburgh.
General information
Short courses are open to anyone aged 18 and over.
The course fee covers tuition and materials where stated. You will need to bring all other items listed under the ‘Materials to bring’ section.
Refreshments
Coffee and tea are included in the course fee, but you will need to bring lunch with you to eat in the refreshments room. There are plenty of local venues to purchase food locally, if needed, though we recommend that you bring a packed lunch.
Refunds and cancellations
Cancellations are permitted up to 6 weeks before the start of a course and subject to a £35 cancellation fee. Refunds will not be given for cancellations less than 6 weeks before the start of a course.
Students who do not attend due to illness, personal or professional commitments do not have the right to a refund. For this reason, we recommend that students take out personal insurance against any unforeseeable circumstances before the start of their course. It is not possible to transfer to future courses.
We reserve the right to cancel a class in unusual circumstances. We try to avoid this where possible, but sometimes it is unavoidable. In this situation, a full refund will be given. We’re sorry that we cannot be financially responsible for extreme weather conditions, travel disruption or any other situations that are outside our control.

This venue has steps to the front reception, with limited access via a side gate to the ground floor. There is a small lift to higher floors or stairs.
Safety
Short course students are required to sign a safety compliance form as part of West Dean Health and Safety regulations.
