The West Dean Professional Knowledge Network is pleased to welcome Jecks Stone as the fourth speaker in our series, The Sustainable Designer.
In this talk, Jecks Stone will discuss her work designing environmentally conscious interiors that are response to user need.
Jecks set up Persona Abode Interiors to specialise in designing eco-conscious residential interiors, with a focus on designing for people and supporting world causes.
Her appreciation of interior design comes from her experiences of being terrified to step into her own home. Having endured occurrences of domestic violence, through the eyes of a child and also as an adult, she understands how the sanctuary of home crumbles when you no longer feel safe in the very environment in which you live. Understanding that this loss alters how you feel about yourself, and how you interact with the world, Jecks creates our most personal environments that we inhabit as a way of uplifting the individual.
Having come from a long background in listed building conservation and commercial recycling management, Jecks is not swayed by aesthetics, alone. Architecture and the environment are important to her creativity. She is unimpressed by the idea of consumer trends, as it doesn't sit well with carving out your true design style or design experience. Rather than being sucked into the vortex of designing client’s homes for the sake of fashion, Persona Abode concentrates on providing sensory experiences that benefits wellbeing whilst also honouring the planet.
Believing that the profession of Interior Design should be held accountable for its participation in unethical practices, Jecks pursued studies in vegan design, becoming a “certified cruelty-free” designer in 2017. Since then, Jecks has applied evidence and science-based principles studied at West Dean, Parsons New School of Design and the WELL Building Institute to elevate the experiences we have in the places that should nurture us every day, home.
Keen on helping to clean up the industry’s act, it was essential to team up with other interior design practices to effect significant change. In March 2021, Persona Abode was one of 9 founding signatories to Interior Design Declares, an official public declaration and show of commitment to respond to the environmental crises around the globe. As part of the wider network, Built Environment Declares, the collective voice shares resources, liaises with other industry-based organisations and networks and constructively engages with clients and the architectural press.
