Discover the Wild: Foraging Walk at West Dean 🌿

17 October and 18 October 2026 | 11.00am-1.30pm

Step away from the everyday and discover the delicious wild foods growing across the West Dean estate.

Whether you're new to foraging or want to deepen existing knowledge, join a professional forager for a relaxed, hands-on walk through the landscape of the South Downs.

We'll begin with an introduction to the essentials of foraging, including how to forage responsibly, identify wild foods safely, and get the most from nature's seasonal bounty. Then we'll head out into the wilder corners of the estate to explore what's growing and what's best to harvest and use - there's always plenty to discover.

Along the way, you'll learn about a wide variety of edible wild plants and fungi, with practical tips on correct identification, harvesting, potential look-alikes and, most importantly, how to turn your finds into delicious food. Expect plenty of inspiration and cooking ideas to take home with you.

Come along, get outdoors, and discover just how much delicious food is growing wild across the West Dean estate. 🌿

What to bring
The event takes place outdoors in rain or shine, so please come prepared for the weather. We recommend bringing:

  • Weather-appropriate clothing
  • Sturdy footwear or walking boots
  • A drink
  • A notebook and pen if you’d like to take notes

Please note: Foraging is wonderfully seasonal, so we cannot guarantee exactly what you'll find, as the plants, fungi and wild food will vary throughout the year - but that is all part of the fun!

Tickets must be purchased in advance as spaces are limited. Please get in touch meetings@westdean.ac.uk if you have any questions.

Entry is through West Dean Gardens entrance where a member of staff will check your ticket.
