The Westmill Wind Farm and Solar Park is a pioneering community energy hub, located in Oxfordshire near the Wiltshire border. Completed in 2011, Westmill is unique with both wind and solar community-owned electricity generation on one site. In fact, the solar park was the first community-owned of its kind in the UK, and at its inception it was thought to be the UK’s first and the world’s largest co-operatively run, community-owned solar installation.

Here is your chance to come and see how it all works!

Join us on-site at Westmill to discover renewable energy and the positive impact it has on our climate. Hear the eventful history of the Westmill, before learning about the installation and energy generation of our five wind turbines and over twenty-thousand solar panels. Country Living has called Westmill one of the "6 most impressive solar farms around the world" to visit. You will experience at close quarters just how awe-inspiring this technology is.

This tour offers a unique, intimate and understandable perspective on how a wind farm and solar park works, all led by our team of friendly volunteer guides!

This event takes place on-site at Westmill (see HERE for how to find us). A maximum of 9 tickets allowed per party please. Larger groups may be eligible to request a bespoke tour.

GOOD TO KNOW BEFORE YOU VISIT

  • On-site tours normally last between 60 and 90 minutes.
  • The tour involves a moderately level walk of around 1.5 to 2 miles. Most of this is on hard, stony ground, except the solar park which is grassy.
  • Dogs are not permitted inside the Solar Park (except assistance / guide dogs).
  • Our public on-site tour days are suitable for people of all ages. However, some of the tour content may be too advanced for younger children. We therefore encourage such children to visit as part of a school trip – where content will be specifically tailored.
  • We regret we cannot allow access to inside our turbines. However, you will be verbally guided on what is inside each turbine, supported by photos.
