WHCO continues our 2026–27 season of Resilience with our winter chamber concert, Unyielding Voices, highlighting both individuals and musical works that endure across time, shaping how we understand ourselves and one another.

In Unyielding Voices, we explore both individuals and musical works that endure across time. Their stories of hope and perseverance shape how we understand our past, and each other.

Valerie Coleman’s Portraits of Langston brings the words and spirit of Langston Hughes vividly to life through a compelling blend of music and narration. Each movement captures a different facet of Hughes’s voice: playful, reflective, and direct. Drawing on jazz, classical, and vernacular traditions to illuminate his lasting cultural impact, Coleman’s work reminds us that resilience is often found in the act of telling one’s story, of preserving identity and truth through art.

Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat major offers a complementary perspective, one rooted in connection and shared experience. With its expansive lyricism, vibrant character, and conversational interplay among instruments, the Septet invites listeners into a richly human musical dialogue that showcases resilience through its emotional depth.
