Wood & Paint Community Sculpture @ Lythe Village Hall

About the Activity
Gather with Liz Collier, Rose Rider & Ste Iredale across three hands-on sculpture sessions at Lythe Village Hall to build two large-scale community artworks in wood & paint.

Session 1 brings participants together to design the sculptures with the artists; shaping ideas, making collective decisions & planning the forms that Ste will carve. Sessions 2 & 3 open up the painting; participants work directly onto the carved wooden pieces, building colour, pattern & detail that reflects the communities of Whitby & the surrounding area. The finished works will go on to form a public installation at Pannett Park as part of the Whitby Gathers programme.

No prior art experience is needed. Join one session or follow all three; each has its own contribution to make & every pair of hands shapes what the sculptures become.

What to Bring

About the Facilitators
Ste Iredale is a chainsaw sculptor based in Staithes, 11 miles north of Whitby, whose large-scale wooden carvings are found across the North York Moors & beyond. His work spans wildlife, mythological subjects & figures, with commissions for the North York Moors National Park, the Forestry Commission & Middlesbrough's public art programme. He has been sculpting for over a decade & is one of the most distinctive makers working in the Yorkshire landscape today.

Liz Collier is a visual artist & improviser whose large-scale works in paint & fabric have featured at festivals across the north of England. Drawing on a practice rooted in abstraction, movement & collective making, Liz creates spaces where participants feel genuinely free to contribute & where the resulting work carries the energy of everyone in the room.

Rose Rider is a printmaker & community artist whose practice centres on bold, expressive image-making using stencil-cutting, block printing & mixed-media textile techniques. She works across public & participatory art with a focus on creating workshop environments where participants make confident, distinctive choices from the very first session.
