Using Restorative Justice for LGBTQ+ hate crime

Welcome to our second Restorative Justice Forum of 2024! 

At a time when hate crime against the LGBTQ+ community is on the increase, the use of Restorative Justice is especially important. Those harmed by hate often say “I just don’t want this to happen to anyone else.” Restorative Justice can achieve this, changing the hearts and minds of those who harmed through giving them the understanding of their impact. 

At this event, Kate Aldous, our Deputy CEO, will launch our new Good Practice Guide for LGBTQ+ hate and talk about the key learnings from the five year project on which it is based, including barriers and solutions. 

Billie Boyd from Galop will provide some context on the issue and Lucie Brooke from Free2Be and LGBT Consortium will discuss working with young LGBTQ+ people.

Alex Hyatt of Southwark Youth Justice Service and Kate Belbin of Sussex Police will talk about creative responses in order to have a restorative intervention in the face of challenges. They will talk about their exciting and proactive work, including outreach and engagement with LGBTQ+ communities.
