**PROGRAMME CHANGE**
Sadly, Ignas Maknickas has taken ill and is no longer able to perform. Ariel Lanyi, freshly returned from his debut at the Grafenegg Festival with the the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, will instead take to the stool – performing Schubert’s Sonata in G, Bartók’s Fifteen Hungarian Peasant Songs, and Max Reger’s Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Bach.
Born in Jerusalem in 1997, Ariel Lanyi studied at the Royal Academy of Music and is an inaugural grand prize winner of the 2021 Young Classical Artists Trust (London) and Concert Artists Guild (New York) International Auditions. In 2023 he was honoured to receive the Prix Serdang, a Swiss prize awarded by the distinguished Austrian pianist Rudolf Buchbinder, and was also recognised as one of Classic FM’s Rising Stars.
Schubert's Sonata and Reger's Variations and Fugue each represent the pinnacle of their composers' later output - the former the last of Schubert's Sonatas to be published in his lifetime and a sublime reflection on his writing up to that point, and the latter the greatest realisation of Reger's mastery of structure and form. Bartók's work, meanwhile, captures the folk music of Hungary amidst the turmoil of the First World War in fifteen short fragments - initially recorded on phonograph before they were rearranged and recomposed for piano.
This concert includes a spotlight performance by the astonishing Bethany Reynolds, a nine-year-old pianist and composer who studies piano under Siu Chui Li and composition under Leon Haxby at Saffron Centre for Young Musicians. She is also a member of the National School for Young Chamber Music Players, Procorda, and recently won the Independent School Association Music Composition Competition.
