Nature Detectives
Wed 29th July, 10.30am - 12noon
A nature play session for families with children aged between 3 and 10 years*. Come and explore Rose Cottage garden at Harnham Water Meadows and take part in fun and creative hands-on activities.
This session we will be thinking about fish and butterflies. We’ll be doing leaf bashing (hapazome) to create a nature-printed butterfly on fabric and making pretend fishing rods.
We’ll also be going on a caterpillar hunt and playing a fish-themed game of tag.
Children can dip in and out of whatever activities they choose to do. Activities on offer will include:
Bug hunting
Caterpillar hunt
Eco craft activities
Mud kitchen
Games
All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
*Older siblings are welcome to come and join in too. No charge for siblings under 3 years.

Have a go at leaf bashing (hapazome) to make a nature-printed fabric butterfly. This involves hitting leaves and petals with a mallet to make an imprint on a piece of fabric.

Make a pretend fishing rod!

What to bring
- Drinks and snacks for your morning
- Wellies or trainers are the best footwear.
- We hope to be outside for the whole session, so bring suitable layers, sun protection and waterproofs if there is a chance of rain. We will use the indoor space for activities if it is very wet.
- Guide dogs are welcome but no other dogs please.
Cost:
- Standard ticket £9 per child
- Supporter ticket £11 per child (for those who are happy to pay a little more to subsidise a place for those who can’t afford to pay the standard price)**
- Or pay what you feel
**The idea behind 'pay it forward' systems like this is to do acts of kindness which will have a positive effect on others, and in return the recipients are just asked to pass on the good deed to keep the cycle going.
