Fantastic Fungi

Wed 28 Oct 2026 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Avon Valley Nature Reserve, SP1 3NR

*Ticket sales end at 12pm on Monday 26th, when the baking will commence!*

Join us for an autumn wander along the River Avon and discover the fascinating world of fungi and other wildlife on our doorstep.

Our main focus will be finding and identifying interesting fungi, from familiar species to the weird and wonderful. Along the way, we’ll also look at the trees and birds we encounter, with our experienced leaders James and Charley sharing tips to help you recognise different species and fascinating facts about local wildlife.

We’ll finish by gathering together for hot drinks and homemade cake, with time to chat about what we’ve discovered.

Who is it for?

This event is suitable for anyone interested in wildlife and wellbeing who wants to spend time in nature with others, learning new things. We value diversity, and hope to create a community that reflects the breadth of people in our society. Please share any medical, mobility or other needs on booking, so we can plan activities that are suitable for all.

Where?

We will meet at the bicycle park outside Fiver Rivers Leisure Centre, Hulse Rd, Salisbury SP1 3NR. The route will be roughly 1 mile on uneven ground. It may be muddy or wet underfoot. Basic benches will be available for sitting on at the start, middle and end of the session.

What to bring

  • Dress for the weather. We will be outside for the duration of the session. Please check the weather forecast and bring waterproofs and warm layers. If it has rained, sturdy walking boots or wellies will be best if you have them (or old trainers you don't mind getting muddy and possibly wet feet).
  • Guide dogs are welcome but no other dogs please.

Cost

Adult Standard Ticket: £12.50
Adult Supporter Ticket: £15

Child Standard Ticket: £10
Child Supporter Ticket: £12

Or by donation - pay what you feel.

FAQs

Why are there different ticket price options?

We want everyone to be able to attend our events. Those who are willing and able to pay a little bit more and book a Supporter ticket help to subsidise a place for someone who can’t afford to pay the Standard ticket price. Choosing the Supporter ticket allows us to offer Donation tickets. This kind of system is sometimes called 'pay it forward', and choosing to book a Supporter ticket is an act of kindness and generosity.

Do we go ahead in the rain?

We believe in getting out whatever the weather! Please assume the session is going ahead unless you hear otherwise by email the day before. We may postpone if the weather forecast is really wet/stormy, but will go ahead in most weathers e.g. light rain, showers. Always check the weather forecast and dress for the weather.

What if I'm late?

Please aim to arrive ready to start at the start time. We'll start at the location below before heading off on a mini adventure.

Will you teach us how to forage edible fungi?

No. There are more than 12,000 types of wild fungi in the UK - far too many for us to teach you in a morning! You should only eat a wild food if you yourself are 100% sure what it is, and if you have permission to pick it. Uncontrolled foraging can impact negatively on ecosystems.

Can I bring my dog?

Assistance dogs are welcome. No other dogs please. Our wildlife-watching may be negatively impacted by the presence of dogs, and the dynamics between dogs, and between dogs and people, can be tricky too.

Anything else?

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. We can chat and suggest solutions to help you attend, on a 1:1 basis. Contact Charley on 07519 464023 or charley@waw.org.uk
