Winter Skills Walking Weekend
This two day course will cover the basics of winter movement and safety in the mountains. It is designed for people who are confident and competent summer hillwalkers and would like to take their walking into a winter environment.
One day will be a skills based day and the other a journey day through the mountains. The exact locations and routes will be decided closer to the time based on weather and conditions. All locations used will be easily accessible from Fort William and lifts can be arranged as required.
Over the two days the following will be covered:
- Understanding clothing and equipment suitable for the winter mountains
- Assessing weather and conditions in winter
- Understanding the avalanche forecast, associated risk and appropriate decision making
- Learning safe and efficient movement on snow and ice
- Where, when and how to use crampons and ice axe
Scheduled dates are 3rd/4th February 2024 and 24th/25th February 2024.
Maximum of 6 participants per course.
The cost of the two day course is £175 this does not include equipment hire.
To participate in the course you will need to either have your own, or hire, winter boots, ice axe, crampons and helmet. There are several equipment hire shops in Fort William including Ellis Brigham and Scottish Mountain Hire. Feel free to ask me for advice on appropriate equipment.
It is also likely that we will use to Nevis Range gondola on one of the days to get up to the snow line easily and maximise our time on snow. This is an additional cost of £24.95.
Further details and an equipment list for the weekend will be provided following booking.
Any questions at all do get in touch - I look forward to enjoying the winter mountains with you.
