Midwinter walk: returning to the dark

At the winter solstice, when daylight barely grazes the edges of our days and the frantic energy of Christmas engulfs us, there's a particular magic in slowing down. This is the time our ancestors called the return of the light, not because it arrives immediately, but because we trust in its promise whilst standing in the deepest dark.

We'll weave through Winchester's streets and along the river, not as tourists but as seekers of winter's medicine. The cathedral's stones hold centuries of midwinter prayers; the Itchen flows with the same patient rhythm it's kept through countless dark seasons. We'll pause in spaces where the city breathes differently in December's rush, finding pockets of stillness that invite reflection.

This walk is about 'wintering': that essential practice of drawing inward, of composting the year that's passed, of finding the seeds of renewal in apparent dormancy. Together, we'll explore what it means to befriend the darkness rather than simply endure it.

Your guide

Emily has been walking with the seasons for many years, foraging, contemplating and connecting with nature. Weaving together threads of folklore, earth-based spirituality and a deep love for Hampshire's sacred landscape, she leads sessions that embrace the medicine of walking together, especially when the world asks us to pause and listen.

Please note: This is a reflective, spiritual walk focusing on seasonal wisdom and personal contemplation. While we'll pass historical sites, this isn't a historical tour. In the unlikely event we need to cancel due to extreme weather, full refunds will be offered.
