In Wirral, we have a target of 2041 to be net carbon neutral (this means that the amount of carbon that we produce compared to what we take out of the atmosphere is balanced).
This target has been agreed by Cool Wirral - a partnership made up of the council and local organisations such as housing associations, emergency services, local action groups, community groups and the faith sector.
To achieve this target, a strategy, known as Cool 2, was developed and endorsed by all partners in December 2019.
Wirral can’t fulfil all of these aims without collective action. The Cool 2 strategy talks about how we can all play our part to help achieve carbon neutrality by 2041. These ways include:
- A reduction in the energy needed for our homes by 2030
- A switch to fossil free local travel by 2030
- To increase tree and woodland cover, in line with national recommendations, and to protect soils and natural habitats
- To use resources - materials, land and food - in a sustainable way helping to cut waste and change our diets
You can read the full strategy on the Council's website.
