Description
Wirral Countryside Volunteers have been involved at Thornton Common since 1989 on the initial requested of Wirral Rugby Club. Thornton Common is registered Common Land and a Local Wildlife Site. The common retains some its original heathland flora, namely common heather, the ponds referred to as Mostyn Pits were dug before 1792 and retain a wide range of pond flora and the common is only site in Wirral for Marsh cinquefoil. The woodland ride which was created in 1992 has been colonised by marsh orchids.
Scything the woodland glade and other maintenance activities - treating the wooden gate, some willow removal around the pond and removal of competing vegetation along the eastern hedgerow.
At 15:00 there will be the unveiling the recently installed lectern display case inside the entrance to Thornton Common made possible from a legacy from Eric Jackson a long time WCV. Following this tea and cake will be taken at the Common with Eric's Family. This will be followed by a short a walk around the common and pond dipping." Do feel free to come along at 3pm to celebrate the 35 years of work at Thornton Common and Eric's contribution to the volunteers.
Parking will be in the car park of Wirral Rugby Club which is immediately next door to the Common.
