A Gathering for Muslims and those leaning to Islam
You are invited to join us for this participative, online Ramadan event, organised by Wisdom In Nature and friends. Rather than a lecture or panel discussion format, this is a small, intimate gathering of listening and sharing. Our intention is to offer a space for engagement and the possibility of transformation.
There will be a short 15 minute story, followed by a chance for heart-felt sharing and connection. It is a space to honour ourselves and each other this Ramadan, and within a period of sudden transition and undeniable interdependency.
The session will be centred on the concept of ‘Earth & Community’. This is a strand from Wisdom In Nature’s five strand activism model - an integrated approach to moving away from that which undermines wholeness, and a moving towards that which supports repair and balance. Our world is at a time where such collective reflection and wise, integrated action is essential.
The Earth & Community strand is specifically a move: - away from corporate domination and consumerism; - towards simplicity, sharing and a deeper connection to the earth & its diverse communities.
More details on the Earth & Community strand are here
Who? This online gathering is for anyone who values a conscious, heart-centred exploration with others in relation to the world we are in. It will be limited to approximately 10 people. It is open to Muslims and anyone who leans towards Islam.
How? Together, we will create a gentle, virtual container. We will listen to what is alive for each of us. We will be welcoming the breadth and depth of our experiences. We will allow difference to co-exist. We will sometimes pause the outer conversation, and step into moments of silence.
Where: The call will be on zoom. You can use zoom on a computer, ipad, or smartphone. Once you’ve registered, you will receive a weblink for the zoom call on your confirmation email. If you have not used zoom before on your device, you will be prompted to download and install a small file (takes a few seconds) when you click the link we send. You can then accept to join the call by video.
Speaker/Storyteller: We are fortunate to have with us, Sharon Baron, who will share a short story as a starting point for our collective exploration. Sharon is someone whom we see as an inspiring Muslim change-maker, and who views herself as a student at the ‘University of Life’. She recognises that the trials and tribulations in her own life have contributed to her education as much as any formal study and training.
Sharon was educated in the Social Sciences and Humanities, and has trained in Offender and Addict Mentoring. She has worked in a range of occupations, as diverse as nursing the terminally ill, wardening in bail hostels, working for council housing departments, and being a volunteer coordinator on an organic allotment at a drug rehab centre.
She has been a campaigner and activist on many issues including animal rights, social justice and the environment, and was in a core group during the Occupy Movement.
It was through a series of transformational life experiences, along with feeling a deep need to escape an increasingly toxic culture and the searching for clarity and purity, that led her to Islam.
Sharon will share a story she has written titled, "The ‘Children’ of the Estate " ‘Children’ in this context means each of us and other species that are losing their natural habitat due to the impacts of industrialisation. The story will touch on the collision between 'progress' and impoverishment, and will draw on the insight of innocence, power relations and protest.
