Introduction to Shakespearean Performance

Fri Nov 13, 2026 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM Wisteria Theater, 91605

This workshops introduces participants to the practical techniques of performing Shakespeare. Through text analysis, physical exploration, performance, and individualized coaching, students will learn to approach heightened language with confidence, clarity, and emotional honesty.

Taught by NYU Tisch trained Connor Tyler Gray.

Shakespeare's language can be intimidating, but his characters are driven by remarkably recognizable human needs, desires, and conflicts.

In this introductory workshop, participants will explore Shakespeare's language as a tool for active, emotionally grounded performance. After a brief introduction to Shakespearean verse, language, and performance techniques, students will present individual monologues and receive personalized direction and feedback.

Through guided exercise, experimentation, and repeated performance, participants will discover how changes in intention, physicality, rhythm, and interpretation can transform a Shakespearean monologue.

Students are encouraged to arrive with a prepared Shakespeare monologue or even a scene of your choice. Short selections can also be provided for beginners.

Workshop Goals:

  • Develop confidence with Shakespearean language.
  • Explore character objectives, tactics, and emotional stakes.
  • Learn fundamental techniques of verse and textual analysis.
  • Experience the rehearsal and redirection process.
  • Leave with a stronger, more specific classical monologue performance.
