The Book Club Strong Ground

This monthly book club is open to all with a curiosity in courageous leadership and an interest in expanding our capacity for courage. Whether you are familiar with Dr Brené Brown's work or not, this will be an opportunity to learn, explore and discuss her latest book with other curious souls. Over the past six years Brené has been collecting data from the Dare to Lead global community of coaches and facilitators and weaving this wisdom into her new book, Strong Ground.    It is Brené's hope that this book can serve as a playbook for everyone, from senior leaders developing and executing complex strategies to GenZers entering and navigating turbulent work environments. 

This session will be covering Chapters 9 and 10 of Brené Brown's book Strong Ground focussing on emotional regulation, mission clarity, and authentic leadership. 

Chapter 9 introduces the "Above/Below the Line" practice for accountability, while Chapter 10 defines "Grounded Confidence" as the quiet assurance that comes from values and experience. 

• Above the Line: This means you are calm, aware, and responsible. You act based on your values.
• Below the Line: This means you are upset, scared, or reacting without thinking. You might act defensively or lash out at others.
• The Lesson: It is okay to slip "below the line." The trick is to notice it quickly, pause, and find your way back up. 

Chapter 10: Grounded Confidence. This chapter explains how to build true confidence rather than faking it with arrogance. 

• What it is: Grounded confidence is a quiet, steady trust in yourself. It comes from preparation, learning from mistakes, and knowing your values.
• What it is not: It is not cockiness, bullying, or needing to prove you are the smartest person in the room.
• The Lesson: When you are grounded in confidence, you can stand up for your ideas and handle criticism without your ego taking over.
