Schools and organizations often fund implicit bias trainings that ignore the individual and collective origins of our biases. Yet we cannot expect the results we want in the present – more equitable, inclusive communities of belonging – without getting to the root of our childhood socialization. Likewise, we often hear of the importance of “cultural competency,” but rarely discuss how this looks and feels in practice.
In Getting to the Root, participants will get a taste of how Sarah and Anthony bring a fresh lens to these pernicious issues by inviting deep reflection, centering small group activities, and offering ample practice addressing their most feared conversations - in a safe and brave space. Workshop participants will: 1) practice engaging with the past so they can manage their reactions to challenging situations in the moment and build effective habits for the future; 2) understand the difference between intercultural and cross-cultural awareness; 3) recognize the benefits of tying culture to curricula/initiatives and how deficit models rise in its absence; 4) explore the humanistic nature of culturally responsive teaching; and 5) get tools to move toward cultural humility while actively avoiding hierarchies.
