About the day
Visitors should aim to arrive by 4pm at Farrs, the historic home of John and Jennie Makepeace in Beaminster. The visit will start at the seasoning shed where we stock a range of English timbers. For example, oak, planted at Longleat in 1740 was harvested 240 years later in 1980, magnificent trees that illustrate the benefits of good silviculture over 240 years.
Then, in the house, we will have tea and refreshments before seeing the Makepeace collection of furniture, many of them prototypes for subsequent commissions in UK and across the world. John will give a talk about designing and making furniture of uncompromising quality for private clients from Britain’s wonderful woods.
Description
To complete the Open Woods and Workshops Day, you are invited to Farrs, home of John and Jenny Makepeace in Beaminster. John designs and makes furniture of ‘museum’ quality.
After a brief explanation about the seasoning of timber, there will be tea in the kitchen and then a chance to see the Makepeace collection of furniture in the house, all made of timbers grown in Britain.
In 1976, he bought historic Parnham House, Beaminster to provide larger workshops for his business and to establish a very successful school for aspiring furniture makers. In 1981, the Educational Trust bought Hooke Park and set about building a future campus there, developing new technologies for the use of forest thinnings as the major components in the construction. When John retired from directing the Trust in 2001, it amalgamated with the Architectural Association in which he has a continuing involvement.
