Why carers are the best employees: Overcoming challenges of supporting carers in the workplace.

Many unpaid carers are forced to carry the mental and physical load of their caring role, whilst juggling employment. Carers often report feeling unsupported at work, and do not feel confident or comfortable explaining their situation to their employer. This often means carers leave their employment, leaving a lasting emotional and financial impact, and leads to organisations losing skilled and experienced employees.

It's also recognised that organisations may not have the correct information, advice, policies, and procedures in place to best support colleagues, employees, and service-users, who are carers. Employers may be unsure who is a carer, what support they need at work, and what next steps to take.

  • Every day, 600 people leave work to care for someone (Carers UK)
  • Juggling work and caring responsibilities is a massive worry for carers, with 75% of carers struggling (Carers UK)
  • Almost half of carers said caring had a negative impact on their job and working ability (Carers Week)

This webinar is hosted by the Working for Carers project. We support unpaid carers aged 16+ to find and maintain employment, education, training, and volunteering opportunities. The project also works alongside organisations and employers to become carer-friendly workplaces, including implementing the Carers Leave Act and Flexible Working Act.

This project is a partnership between Newcastle Carers, North Tyneside Carers' Centre, and Carers Northumberland. It is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with the North East Combined Authority as the lead authority.
