Maria Kosovitsa (soprano), Jane Swan (mezzo-soprano) and Anna Alvizou (pianist)
The "Trio Mediterraneo" creates a concert program that tells a story by combining Western "classical" music with Greek, Western Mediterranean, Spanish, Portugese, Minor Asian, Egyptian and Indian traditionals.
The ’Trio Mediterraneo’ is an ensemble of two singers and a pianist. In 2021, Maria Kosovitsa (soprano), Jane Swan (mezzo-soprano) and Anna Alvizou (pianist) met in Antwerp and began working together.
The name of the trio is derived from the three members' home country, Greece and the inspiration they draw from the surrounding region. Apart from their individual engagements as soloists or in other ensembles, Kosovitsa, Swan, and Alvizou perform as a trio in Greece and Belgium. So far, they have performed opera excerpts and art-song concerts.
The 'Trio Mediterraneo' attempts to create concert programs that tell a story by combining Western/classical pieces, music with traditional Greek/Eastern elements, and music by lesser-known composers.
The concert program is a veritable kaleidoscope of colors and stories spanning from the Western Mediterranean Sea to Greece and Asia Minor, Egypt, and India.
Well-known composers such as Maurice Ravel, George Bizet, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Hector Berlioz, and others are joined by two Greek composers, Yannis Konstantinidis and Theofrastos Sakellaridis, as well as the Spanish poet, Federico Garcia Lorca, who is also a composer in this program.
The texts include major poets' works, as well as Greek folk songs, excerpts from poems by Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore, and traditional Spanish songs from the 15th and 18th centuries.
They tell stories about the Spanish city of Cordoba, Aladdin's palace, and the Arabian nights, describe images of everyday life on the Greek island of Chios, and take the audience from medieval Spain to the Sphinx of Egypt, along with many other places.
