WOW × DIFF: Welsh x South African Shorts + In Conversation With The Filmmakers (15)

WOW × DIFF brings together three Welsh shorts and three South African shorts in a programme co-curated by WOW Film Festival and the Durban International Film Festival. This is a FREE event, and everyone is welcome!

The strand has been developed in collaboration with DIFF Programmer Helene Naicker, with a simple intention: to place emerging filmmakers from Wales and South Africa side by side and allow their work to speak across contexts. These are films grounded in place — in landscape, language, community and memory — but open enough to travel.

The six selected shorts move across tone and form. Some lean into social realism, others into folklore or allegory. Some are quiet and observational; others more confrontational. Together, they create a varied and textured programme that reflects the range of contemporary short filmmaking in both countries.

The Films:

Fleas (Amazeze) – dir. Jordy Sank

Leapt Niches – dir. Dominique Spies

B(l)ind the Sacrifice – dir. Nakhane

Mari Lwyd – dir. Charlie Grayson

Butty – dir. Liz Cartwright

FLOCK – dir. Mac Nixon

The Welsh shorts in this programme will also screen as part of the official programme of the Durban International Film Festival in Durban (23 July – 2 August 2026), the oldest and largest film festival in Southern Africa. That reciprocal platform is central to the partnership, creating international visibility for Welsh filmmakers while bringing South African work into Welsh cinemas in a meaningful way.

The screening will be followed by a post-film conversation with DIFF's co-curator and the attending filmmakers.
