Join Wycombe Arts Centre and final year students from Central School of Speech and Drama for an evening of theatre and reflection. 

3 + D: What do you get when you combine maths and theatre? An even bigger bang. When they realize that their known world - the triangle - is not all there is, things begin to crumble.

Ripples: If science tells us that our brains are making up a story about reality, how do we understand the reality we believe? A multi-layered audio-visual artwork about distorted reality.

This is the true story of how the world came to be.

M, I and U are variables that live in a triangle. Controlled by an external, unseen voice, they explore their world. Three is all they know - three sides of their world, three variables, three words... When a tetrahedron appears, they are amazed to find a. fourth. side.

​When they realize that their known world - the triangle - is not all there is, things begin to crumble... Where does that external voice come from? Can they disobey the voice? Can they break the rules of their world? Can they… maybe… LEAVE the triangle?

Written and directed by Diana Vallverdu i Cabrera and devised with ANTS Theatre, 3+D is an earnest, clowning pursuit for answers, using maths to breakdown the rules of the world as we know it.

About the Company

ANTS are a collective made up of six interdisciplinary international artists who came together to make pointedly pointless theatre; we pursue that which may seem pointless and pursue it until it becomes pointed!

We formed in the heart of the pandemic, determined to make real live theatre that could thrive in and beyond a socially distanced world. Working as a hive mind, we merge fantasy and reality to build worlds, bring people together and provoke autonomous thought. The theatre we create transforms spaces, innovates analogue and challenges audiences.

About the Director

Diana Vallverdú i Cabrera, the lead artist for this project, is a mathematician from Barcelona. Two years ago she moved to London, where she is currently studying an MFA in Advanced Theatre Practice at the Central School of Speech and Drama. Due to her background, she sees the theatre through mathematical lenses. In every show produced by the company, her approach comes from the search of logic and patterns within performance.

An immersive theatre performance that uses audio, video and live performance to explore to explore how perception affects our realities.

If we found that our brains are making up a story about reality, how do we understand the reality we believe?

Ripples tells the story of a blind and deaf man who ‘witness’ the drowning of two young boys. Set near the shore of a beautiful lake they experience the same event, but the truth of their reality diverges.

Ripples was inspired by Xi Chen's real-life experience in Tibet when she was 5 years old. The performance explores the nature of truth and how our individual views of reality define our own perspective of truth.

About Director:

Xi Chen is a London-based theatre-maker and director originally from China. She is an MFA prospective graduate student in the Advanced Theatre Practice course at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. She is interested in exploring non-verbal performative pathways that reveal what lies beneath the surface of our perceived interpretation of life. How does our empirical experience of our environment differ from those around us? Her work explores the boundaries between technology and bodies through physical performance, projection, and exacting imagery
