Welcome to the Birdsong & Wildlife Safari at Wyken.
Join us for a guided dawn chorus walk through the Wyken estate, at the peak time of year for birdsong. We'll pass through SSSI ancient woodland, farmland where we've made space for nature through carefully managed margins and hedgerows, visit a small wetland creation project and look at some restored wild flower meadows.
Your guides
Sam Carlisle: the owner and manager of Wyken, will talk about the history of the estate and the approach that it takes on conservation, woodland management, and farming.
Mark Nowers: has a deep passion for birds and nature, and will help you identify species by sight and sound, explain what species thrive in what habitats, and what farms can do to ensure that land management and nature co-exist happily.
Richard Negus: hedge layer and author, who developed the hedgerow management plan at Wyken and has laid many of the 22 km of hedges across the estate. He will explian how and why hedges are laid.
"But 6am is so early!" I know, but it is the peak time for the dawn chorus, sunrise is a magical time to be out, and we'll have hot tea & coffee along the way. And when the walk ends you will have earned a breakfast at The Leaping Hare or in the Farmers' Market, which will just be starting...
Points to remember:
- Please do bring binoculars. If you don't have a pair and would like to borrow some, please let us know in advance.
- While this is a walk, approximately 3km, there are some spaces available to those who are less mobile. Please let us know at the time of booking.
