The Geology of the Fylde Coast – Talk with power point slides

The talk looks at the oldest rocks buried under the Fylde that we know about them from evidence in boreholes, some of these are exposed at places like Cockerham sands. We then talk about the major North-South fault lines that follow the M6, that separate the Fylde plain from the Forest of Bowland hills, which are much older. This is followed by a discussion of the Preesall salt, how it was formed and how the beds of salt have altered the course of the river Wyre. Moving on to the effect of glaciation on the Fylde, the boulder clay, drumlines, moraines, kettle holes and glacial sands. The formation of the Fylde beaches. The historic cliffs at Bispham and how they were eroded before the modern coastal defences were put in place. Finishing with the effect of sea level change on the Fylde coast and the evidence that we have for this.
