Ishiro Honda: Memoirs of a Film Director is a documentary that explores the life and career of prolific Japanese director Ishiro Honda, highlighting his filmography (e.g. his work on the Godzilla films), war experiences, and obsession with the atomic bomb. Through interviews and analysis, it also delves into his friendship and collaboration with Akira Kurosawa.

The screening will include a talk from the director (Jonathan Bellés) + Q&A panel with special guests (Jonathan Bellés & Chris Thorpe).

Jonathan Bellés

Jonathan Bellés (Castellón de la plana, 1988) holds a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and is a Ph.D. in Japanese Sci-Fi Films and Kaijû Eiga at the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

He previously released ‘The Dawn of Kaijû Eiga’ (2019), a documentary about the origins of the monster Godzilla, and he’s excited to show you his new documentary film about Japanese Director Ishiro Honda.

Chris Thorpe

Chris Thorpe is a writer and performer from Manchester – formerly Associate Artist at the Royal Exchange.

Chris' new pieces, A Family Business and the solo piece Talking About The Fire, based on several years researching and working in nuclear disarmament spaces and treaty negotiation developed with China Plate and directed by Claire O'Reilly, are currently touring internationally.
