Online Class - Analyzing Rope Photography Through the Poetics of Sugiura Norio

How can we learn to truly read a rope photograph?

In this online class, we will explore how to analyze a photographic work through the distinctive artistic language and poetics of Norio Sugiura.

Rather than looking only at technique, pose, or composition, we will examine how narrative, atmosphere, the model’s presence, rope, light, framing, props, and the surrounding environment come together to create a complete photographic work.

Particular attention will be given to the role of context in Sugiura’s photography: the objects placed within the frame, the architecture of the space, its textures and background, and the relationship between the model and her surroundings. In his work, props and environment are never merely decorative. They help establish the story, shape the emotional tone of the image, and contribute to the poetic tension between the body, the rope, and the space.

For this session, we will focus on one selected series from SAJIKI, featuring Nanami, whom Norio Sugiura considers one of the most noteworthy models currently appearing in his work.

Before the class, participants will receive a selection of photographs from the featured series, together with video footage from the photo shoot. These materials will allow everyone to study the work in advance and follow the discussion with a deeper understanding of the creative process.

The class

During the class, Norio Sugiura will guide us through the work, addressing questions such as:

• What is the setting and underlying story of the series?
• What qualities of the model shaped the work?
• What role does the rope play within the image?
• How do the props contribute to the narrative and atmosphere?
• How does the surrounding environment affect the meaning of the photographs?
• Where should the viewer direct their attention?
• Which photographs are especially significant, and why?
• What difficulties or challenges arose during the shoot?
• How should we approach the more abstract images?
• What was Sugiura’s mindset while creating the work?

The class will not be limited to listening to Sugiura’s interpretation. Participants will also be encouraged to discuss the images and translate his often abstract and poetic language into concrete observations.

The aim is to develop practical tools for analyzing photographic works: learning how to identify the elements that give an image meaning, understand the relationship between the model, rope, props, space, and photographer, and engage more deeply with Sugiura’s artistic language.

The session will conclude with an open Q&A.

The recording

The zoom call will be recorded and distributed to all the attendees.
In the future, it may also be sold and distributed to other buyers all over the world.
