Dr Cath Nichols is a poet and former academic who has taught creative writing at universities in the north-west for fifteen years. Her pamphlet Tales of Boy Nancy (2005) was turned into a short film with Arts Council funding. It utilised the stories of several people assigned female at birth who lived as men around the 19th and early 20th centuries. A sea-faring love story weaves these narratives together.
In contrast, This is not a Stunt (2017) is more modern, and re-works the teenage years of one person growing up trans in the 1970s. In both cases exact facts are hard to pin down and the fictional aspect of the story-telling works with this to allow readers to make their own connections with ‘factional’ histories. As a cis writer with trans family members, it could be said these are not Cath’s stories to tell; on the other hand, writers who bring to the fore hidden lives do have a role in literature, don’t they?
Cath lives in Warrington and is disabled, queer and autistic. She will read from both works and discuss some of her writing and research processes.
