'Male Presenting: Creating Fiction from Facts' (poetry recital and short talk)
Cath Nichols
10.30-11.00am
This will be delivered in-person at Time Square but we will also stream Cath's talk via Teams. To access the link, please get a free ticket for online attendance.
Dr Cath Nichols is a poet and former academic who has taught creative writing at universities in the north-west for fifteen years. Her pamphlet Tales of Boy Nancy (2005) was turned into a short film with Arts Council funding. It utilised the stories of several people assigned female at birth who lived as men around the 19th and early 20th centuries. A sea-faring love story weaves these narratives together.
In contrast, This is not a Stunt (2017) is more modern, and re-works the teenage years of one person growing up trans in the 1970s. In both cases exact facts are hard to pin down and the fictional aspect of the story-telling works with this to allow readers to make their own connections with ‘factional’ histories. As a cis writer with trans family members, it could be said these are not Cath’s stories to tell; on the other hand, writers who bring to the fore hidden lives do have a role in literature, don’t they?
Cath lives in Warrington and is disabled, queer and autistic. She will read from both works and discuss some of her writing and research processes.
'Our Stonewall: Remembering the Camp Revolt Against Section 28' (short talk)
Liz Hendy
12.30-1.00pm
This will be delivered in-person at Time Square but we will also stream Liz's talk via Teams. To access the link, please get a free ticket for online attendance.
Step back in time to the 1980s and learn about the homophobic legislation that galvanised a generation of LGBTQ+ people in Britain to start a quintessentially queer rebellion to fight for their rights".
Liz Hendy is a PhD student in the Institute of Gender Studies at the University of Chester. Her research documents the personal histories of queer women and nonbinary people who were in school under the shadow of Section 28, highlighting the impact of the legislation and the role of popular culture in the lives of a generation made invisible in mainstream history and cultural memory.
