Kate Smith is a vocal artist, composer and workshop leader who is passionate about creating music and facilitating collective music-making for voices and bodies in motion. With a MMus in Leadership from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, she is the creator of The Embodied Voice, a research, performance, and teaching practice bringing together voice, movement, and improvisation.

Kate has led creative voice and music workshops for The Barbican, Harvard University, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and more, and has provided voice and movement consultation for dance and theatre companies such as Greenwich Dance and Cyphers Theatre Company.

Kate’s practice draws on many influences including yoga, Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais Method®, Body-Mind Centering®, mindfulness, contact improv, dance, and theatre. She has studied with Meredith Monk, Bonnie Bainbridge-Cohen (BMC), Seke Chimutengwende, Robert Sussuma (Vocal Learning Systems), Margaret Pikes (Roy Hart Theatre), Grzegorz Braal (Song of the Goat), Guillermo Horta (VABAS), and more. She is a 200hr Yoga-Alliance certified teacher of Authentic Flow Yoga. She earned her Guildhall Certificate in Coaching & Mentoring, Accredited by the European Mentoring & Coaching Council in 2019.

As a dedicated improviser, Kate has performed in numerous contexts and collaborations (TATE Modern, A Fundação Eugénio de Almeida, Lisboa Incommun), as well as released three albums of collaborative vocal improv since 2020, including Remembering, Anthropos, and Source by Wellspring Collective. Kate is one of the team organizing the UK Vocal Improv Festival Retreat, the only large-scale, cross-UK event of its kind dedicated to vocal improv, now entering its second year.

"I work with people to understand and experience their voice in connection to their body, using movement, awareness, and improvisation. For me, singing, sounding, or speaking in an embodied way entails addressing the whole system from a phenomenological perspective - exploring our felt experience of body/voice functions, breath, nervous system, co-regulation, creative and imaginative expression, and more. While not explicitly a therapeutic practice, addressing the mind-body connection invariably brings up a range of interesting learning axes that touch on movement and thought habits, prior conditioning, cultural contexts, inter-relational aspects, and more. Furthermore, I've found that working with improvisation allows people to unpack and express the mind-body-voice connection in non-linear, creative and insightful ways." - Kate Smith
