Monitoring Mammals

The City Nature Challenge is a global wildlife recording event which unites people in over 500 City Regions all over the world for 4 days of nature observation. 

During this exciting evening event, we'll be creating and setting up some mammal monitoring equipment which we'll then leave out around the zoo estate. The aim is to capture evidence of the species we don't normally encounter, helping gather data about how they are using the site.

What to expect:

• Experts from the zoo and RECORD will guide you through how to make a footprint tunnel, which we'll be setting up outside to capture evidence of mammals.
• We'll also be learning how to use camera traps to capture video and photos of UK wildlife and setting these up outside too.
• It's a chance to help us with our City Nature Challenge recording efforts alongside learning about these mammal monitoring techniques which you could try out yourself at home.

PLUS: join us on 29 April to see what we've found. We'll be working together to go through our camera trap footage and seeing which species have left footprints in our tunnels. If you would like to attend this follow up event please ensure you book separately here.

Accessibility: We are meeting at the main entrance to Chester Zoo and walking across the zoo to our classroom and outdoor location. It is roughly a 20 minute walk. Paths within the zoo are well surfaced, however we are also visiting parts of the estate not normally accessible to the public where we will be traversing long grass and uneven terrain. If you have any mobility needs or other additional needs please do not hesitate to get in touch with us ahead of the event to discuss (email info@record-lrc.co.uk).
