Join us for the second recital of Winchester Arts' Song Series, showcasing the rising stars of solo vocal performance from around the UK. 

George Robarts and Edward Picton-Turbervill present a varied programme of old favourites and little-known works, ranging from the kaleidoscopic music of the Weimar Republic to the homely comfort of British song. Come and be surprised and delighted by some hidden gems of the song repertoire, all delivered with panache and aplomb by one of the most engaging singers of the new generation.

George Robarts is a London-based baritone and postgraduate student of Robert Dean at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He won Third Prize in the Patricia Routledge National English Song Competition 2021, and the Audience Prize at Guildhall’s Chartered Surveyors’ Prize 2022. He is a finalist in the upcoming John Kerr Award for English Song (November 2022). George previously graduated from New College, Oxford with a First in German and Italian.

Recital highlights include Butterworth Six Songs from A Shropshire Lad, Vaughan Williams Songs of Travel, Schumann Dichterliebe, Beethoven An die ferne Geliebte, Ravel Don Quichotte à Dulcinée, Tippett Songs for Ariel and Ullmann Liederbuch des Hafis. Opera roles include Aeneas Dido and Aeneas (New Chamber Opera), Figaro Le nozze di Figaro (Consortium Novum), cover Escamillo Carmen (Longborough Playground Opera), Orfeo L’Orfeo (Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini) and Ulisse Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria (GSMD vocal scenes). Concert appearances include Bach St John Passion (St Bartholomew’s Church, New York), Fauré Requiem (Basilica di Santo Spirito, Florence), Handel Jephtha (Dorking Choral Society), Tippett A Child of Our Time (Oxford University Chorus), and solo cantatas by Bach and Telemann (Oxford Bach Soloists). In 2022, he appeared at the BBC Proms with La Nuova Musica in a concert performance of Dido and Aeneas.

Alongside singing, George is also a multiple-prizewinning translator, currently working on Diedrich Diederichsen’s The Aesthetics of Pop Music for publication by Polity in 2023.

Edward Picton-Turbervill is currently studying with Caroline Palmer for a Master’s in piano accompaniment at the Guildhall, where he is a Goldsmiths’ scholar. He began his musical education in Winchester, as a Chorister at the Cathedral under David Hill and Andy Lumsden, so it is a real pleasure for him to perform here today. He was organ scholar at St John’s College, Cambridge, where he read Music as an undergraduate, graduating with a double First. He was then awarded funding to pursue a Master’s in Environmental Policy, and then spent a year as an exchange student at the University of Heidelberg. From 2018-2021, he was Head of Music at Atlantic College, an international school in Wales. He is the founder of Pipit, a company that devises and produces bespoke house concerts. Alongside his musical activities, he is a committed environmentalist, a teacher, composer, and writer. His first book, Talking Through Trees, was published by the Old Stile Press in 2017.
