LEO Satellites and Astronomical Observations – How Astronomers and Constellations May Coexist
For the past 4 years, astronomers and satellite constellation operators have been collaborating to study the effects of low-orbiting satellites on both optical and radio astronomy, and we have seen promise in novel tools and resources to mitigate brightness. Astronomers have also been promoting regulations that encourage constellation operators to adopt some sort of mitigations. Since its creation last year, the I&T Hub has sought to raise awareness within the satellite community and recruit initial satellite stakeholders to join technical and policy discussions with our astronomy counterparts.
This is the next event in SIA’s complimentary member-only webinar series. It will review the latest understanding of how constellations affect ground-based optical and radio astronomy, and provide an update on the mitigations that have been tried, along with other measurement tools and testing resources available to companies committed to good space stewardship.
