Setting up a local food business - For small producers

You raise livestock, hens, or grow your own vegetables and fruit. Now you are wondering if there is a way to sell your produce locally and develop your own local food business. Perhaps you have been selling a wee bit locally and are thinking of scaling up.

But where to start?

With Jo Hunt, of Knockfarrel Produce in Dingwall, and other inspiring small-scale food producers, our training programme will take you step-by-step through the process of setting up a local food business using your own produce.

Based on years of experience, Jo et al will guide you through the practicalities, the potential pitfalls, the rules & regulations, how to make the figures add up, what support is available, selling and marketing, and more..!

Open to crofters, smallholders, farmers and other small-scale producers.

Dunvegan Community Hall

Tuesday 8th December
9.30 to 5pm day 1 with an evening session 7pm to 9pm

Wednesday 9th December
9.00am to 4.30pm

There will be a programme of class-based sessions with input from Jo about the key factors you need to consider to turn your business idea into a practical enterprise. You will visit West Coast Organics in Roag where Anna and Hanno grow produce for weekly veg boxes throughout the season, and find out about some of the challenges they have faced and how they have resolved them. Additionally, you will be joined at Edinbane Hall by Jake or Aoife from Dun Flashadder Cottage Croft and hear about what they have learned from producing hogget, pork and felted items for local sale.

By the end of the course you should have a plan for your next steps and feel inspired to take them!

Knockfarrel Produce

Knockfarrel Produce is an organic croft near Dingwall. Through a box scheme, Jo sells seasonal veg and fruit, preserves, eggs, cordials and pestos, all produced on the croft, while offering a selection from other local producers.

West Coast Organics

Established in 2015 on their croft in Roag, Anna and Hanno grow a wide range of organic vegetables for local sale. An inspirational enterprise and passionate about local food - Anna and Hanno are very much in demand for running workshops, speaking at events and hosting croft visits!

Dun Flashadder Cottage Croft

Jake and Aoife have developed a diverse range of croft activities, including rearing Hebridean sheep and Mangalitsa pigs, a butchery, and an orchard. Looking after the land and making the most of the cycles within the croft system are important to Jake and Aoife. The Hebrideans are grazed rotationally for biodiversity, and nothing is wasted with the wool being hand felted and made into various products, from tea cosies to felted sheepskin rugs.
