NORTH SEA WATER - “HUISGODEN” - House Gods and Spirits of Land and property with Imelda Almqvist

In Scandinavia we find tomtar. Their name is derived from an old Scandinavian word for land or property. In all Slavic traditions people had elaborate traditions to honour the domovoy ( Домовой, “the ones of the house”). In the Roman era people venerated the Lares and Penates (house gods). Germanic countries had this tradition too, but discarded it after Christianization. (The Church did not approve of idolatry of house gods and spirits).

In short: if you wish to maintain a good relationship with house gods (and also the spirits of place and land), they will bless you by watching over you. They will protect your space (home or even work space/office) from intruders, fix small things that break, alert you when and where danger lurks etc. We ignore those relationships at our peril. These being do not take kindly to being ignored!

In this webinar we explore different types of Germanic house gods and traditions related to them. We also look briefly at the phenomenon of haunted houses! We invite all participants to actively start working with the house gods and related spirits in their own home and location – and observe what happens!
