Programme Overview
This diverse collection of short films celebrates the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit in the face of life's most challenging moments. Spanning continents and communities, these nine stories explore how ordinary people navigate extraordinary circumstances with courage, creativity, and unwavering determination. From the intimate walls of a British classroom to the war-torn streets of Ukraine, from Palestinian running tracks to Northern UK skate parks, each film reveals the profound strength found in human connection, the transformative power of pursuing one's dreams, and the communities we build to support one another through adversity.
Featured Stories
Follow a newly qualified teacher through her unflinching first year in the classroom, witness an unlikely friendship bloom between a newly blind Orthodox baker and his Queer guide dog trainer, and discover how a novelty calendar transforms a Lake District road custodian into an unexpected celebrity. Experience the surreal bodily comedy of reproductive organs materialising at a baby shower, the determination of a Palestinian runner blocked by occupation from her world championship dreams, and a Ukrainian boy's embodiment of hope despite devastating burns from a missile attack. Journey with a musician across the USA chasing an extraordinary truth about Roy Orbison, celebrate the grassroots skateboarding communities creating safe spaces for female and LGBT+ skaters in the North, and witness a neglected child's desperate attempt to provoke parental affection through an abandoned kitten. Together, these films remind us that even in our darkest moments, the human capacity for resilience, hope, and connection endures.
But that's not all! After the screening, meet the talented filmmakers behind these incredible stories in our Q&A session.
