Workshop: Fellowships in cancer research

Thinking of applying for a fellowship or a small grant in the Yorkshire Cancer Research Sheffield Pioneers scheme? Want to get some advice as you prepare your application?

This session, led by the Early Career Researcher Domain team in the Sheffield Cancer Research Executive, will focus on providing advice to those who are thinking of applying for a fellowship or small grant.  Aspects covered will include how the review and interviews work and addressing questions specific to Yorkshire Cancer Research, such as on capacity building.

About the awards in this year's Yorkshire Cancer Research Sheffield Pioneers scheme 

The following awards are particularly relevant to early- and mid-career researchers:

• Fellowships: these are open to both non-clinical and clinical staff, whether based at the University of Sheffield (UoS) or based externally, including those based at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals or elsewhere. External applicants must have a nominated mentor/supervisor based at the UoS.  The two types of fellowship available will be:
  • Advanced Fellowships: up to £1.25M / 5 years
  • Transition Fellowships: up to £350K / 3.5 years
• Small grants: Early career researchers based at the UoS are also eligible to apply for a small grant. These are open to all researchers including those on Permanent, Open Ended or Fixed Term contracts. Staff who are not on a Permanent Contract may include their salary as part of the application. Note that the awards are intended to fund specific new projects/studies. They are not intended to be used as bridging funding (i.e. continuation of post doctoral work on projects under current PI, covering technician or research posts in isolation). 
  • Small Grants: up to £200K / 2 years. 

Project awards of up to £1m are also available in the Pioneers scheme this year but these will not be the focus of this session.  

Those considering applying for cancer-related fellowships from other funders also welcome to join this session.
