Quick summary of the classes being offered:
Heart of Agile Masterclass (1 day)
Agile has become overly decorated. Simplifying it to just the four words: Collaborate, Deliver, Reflect, Improve, not only recovers the
original sense of the movement, but also makes it more powerful and easier to learn. This course will leave you with many ideas for how to improve your project. You will also obtain a Heart of Agile Level A certificate. Join Agile Manifesto co-author Alistair Cockburn for an exploration of the center, the essence, the heart of Agile.
Unifying user stories, use cases, story maps (1 day or 2 day)
It has long been a mystery how to put these techniques together. Finally, use case expert and Agile Manifesto co-author Alistair Cockburn shows how to integrate them, starting with the mistakes (and how to fix them) common to all three.
The 1-day class can only be a taste-test, since it covers: The common concepts needed to make any of the techniques work, then user stories, then use cases, then how to map them, and finally how story mapping fits with both of those. At the end of the day, you will understand the basics of how to use any of all them.
The 2-day class contains all of the 1-day class, but with more time to practice use case writing, slicing those to user stories, and building a story map from a use case and slicing down to a user story set suitable for 1st delivery.
Elephant Carpaccio, or How to slice initiatives to maximize value (1/2 day)
An intense and fun half-day for all roles from executive to business, project manager, and programmer, learning to finely slice and then grow a system for maximum business effect in the shortest time, with growth stages for pivoting, minimizing risk, and changing directions based on market responses.
The learning is visceral. The punchline of the workshop is using a spreadsheet or programming to try to beat the clock and develop a small system in five 8-minute sprints! Business people and programmers alike leave this workshop changed, with a new appreciation for the value of fine-grained development, and the skills to apply it in their own.
Hexagonal Architecture (Ports & Adapters) (1 day)
The morning is spent in the Elephant Carpaccio workshop, to anchor the idea of nano-incremental programming, which is used in the afternoon Hexagonal Architecture workshop. The afternoon is spent programming a sample problem using the Ports & Adapters pattern.
Following a lecture on just what is why to use the Ports & Adapters Architecture, the programmers break into teams to develop, test-first, a small application that starts only with test harnesses and ends connected to a UI and a database.
About the teacher:
Dr. Alistair Cockburn (pronounced CO-BURN) was named as one of the “42 Greatest Software
Professionals of All Times" in 2020, as a world expert on methodologies, project management,
software architecture, use cases and agile development. He co-authored both the Agile Manifesto
and the Project Management Declaration of Inter-dependence. Since 2015 he has been working
on expanding agile to cover every kind of initiative, including social impact project,
governments, and families. He has also worked to unify the seemingly contradictory user stories, use cases and story maps. His "Hexagonal Architecture" is now considered an architectural foundation stone, being taught in universities. For his latest work, see https://alistaircockburn.com/.
